In our opinion, programs used in educational institutions should be as accessible as possible. Unportable software which runs solely on one specific system should be avoided. Software for which the source code is not available should also be avoided, especially if there are open-source programs available which essentially do the same thing. The value of source code availability is immense. It is a matter of choosing between acting as a salesman for a commercial product or emphasizing the possibilities to explore the principles of the used tools.
